Cheap wood protection - Myths and facts
Wood protection is used to protect all types of woodwork outside. You can get water-based or oil-based wood protection, and you can choose from many different brands and price ranges.
There are several common myths about wood protection, such as that pressure impregnated wood does not need wood protection, and that the quality depends on the price. What is myth and what are the facts about tree protection?
Myth 1: Wood protection is not necessary for all types of wood
While it might be great to buy wood that just does not need to be treated, this is unfortunately not the case - it's a myth. This also applies to pressure impregnated wood, although many manufacturers claim that it is not so necessary. The only exceptions are the very expensive woods such as teak, mahogany and oak. This type of wood is often used for furniture, but rarely for other constructions of wood. For cedar and larch, I do not recommend using wood preservative, but instead using an oil based for the purpose. This will require you to treat the tree a little more often (approximately every two years), but the result will also be better.
You should therefore always use wood protection on sheds, terraces, wooden houses, fences and the other small buildings that you have in the garden. If you still choose to use wood protection for larch and cedar, I recommend that you use an oil-based and comprehensive wood protection. You must go through the following steps when using wood preservative:
- You start by cleaning the wood. For pressure impregnated wood you can use a high pressure cleaner. For other types of wood, use a basic cleaner and remove old loose wood protection with a scraper.
- Then use an oil or primer to prepare the wood for wood protection.
- Finally, paint it with 2-3 coats of the selected wood preservative.
You can choose from several different types of wood protection. If you choose a transparent wood protection, the durability is usually only under a year, and it is much less than it is with a semi-covering or full-covering wood protection.
Myth 2: Wood protection lasts for over 15 years
It is also a myth that wood protection can last for over 15 years, although many advertise it. Or rather, it is true if the woodwork is not exposed to wind, weather and other influences at all. Depending on where you live and how heavily your woodwork is exposed, you can certainly not count on you being able to just treat your wood once every fifteen years - unfortunately. Furthermore, you should be aware that fungal spores can appear without warning and they must be removed as soon as possible, after which you must repeat the wood protection on the areas you have treated. Most solid wood protections last for approx. 8 years, the semi-covering for approx. 2-4 years, and the transparent ones for a maximum of one year.
Myth 3: Oil-based wood protection is better than water-based
There are two basic types of wood protection, one that is water-based and one that is oil-based, and many people think that the oil-based one is better than the water-based one, but that is not true. You can paint with a water-based wood preservative on top of an oil-based one, but you cannot paint with an oil-based one on top of a water-based one. The water-based one is usually easier to work with and it is easier to clean the brushes. It is especially suitable for newer woodwork that is not damaged. It retains its elasticity for longer than oil-based wood protection, which peels off over time. The oil-based wood protection penetrates further into the wood and saturates it more. The oil-based one dries relatively quickly, within a few hours, but the water-based one needs 8 hours or more. If you are in a hurry, then you should choose the oil-based one. Just be aware that the oil-based one puts a significant strain on the environment more than the water-based one and that you need to clean your brushes in turpentine instead of under the tap.
Myth 4: Wood protection is just expensive
There is really expensive wood protection and there are constantly more and new types that can do something more. Jotun Demidekk costs e.g. from 1299 kroner for 10 liters, but it is also the latest in wood protection. Another expensive wood protection is Wolf's BioXtrem, which costs approx. DKK 2,280 per 10 L. It has been tested by the Institute of Technology in Borneo's Jungle, and it is estimated that it can last 20-25 years in any environment. It is based on linseed oil. However, it is a myth that it can not be obtained much cheaper, because it can. Bilka sells the brand Solignum, which is recommended by several users in this forum. It costs approx. DKK 900 for 10 liters. Flügger is another good brand, and it costs approx. DKK 1270 for 10 liters of wood protection. Dyrup / Gori has recently developed a new environmentally friendly wood protection in collaboration with the Danish Technological Institute. This wood protection GORI Nature is so environmentally friendly that it has received both the Swan and the Flower. You can get it in the colors green, red, black, chalk and gray, and it costs approx. DKK 750 per 4 L.
Use the right wood protection often
The most important thing is that you treat your outdoor woodwork with wood protection so often that it is always protected. Impregnated wood usually needs to dry a year before it is dry enough to be wood treated. The covering wood protections last for the longest time, so you only have to repeat the treatment approx. every 8 years. There are many good reasons to choose a water-based wood preservative as it is better for the environment, easier to work with and easier to rinse the brushes. Prices start at approx. DKK 600 for 10 L in Jem and Fix, but you can also pay approx. DKK 900 for Soligonum, which is sold by Bilka and recommended by many. If you want a wood protection in the medium quality, Flügger's good quality costs approx. NOK 1,300 for 10 L and Jotun Demidekk costs approx. DKK 1,500 for 9 L. If you emphasize that your wood protection must be as non-toxic as possible, you can choose Gori Nature or BioXtrem, both of which are environmentally friendly wood protection.
